Install on your docs platform

Paste one snippet where your docs platform runs custom code. The snippets below use YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY; copy yours, with your key already in it, from Install in the dashboard. For the full setup, see Setup.

Mintlify

  1. In your docs repo, create a .js file in the content directory — the folder that holds docs.json — for example answertide.js.
  2. Paste the JavaScript below into that file. Mintlify loads a third-party script from a .js file like this, not from a <script> tag in an MDX page.
  3. Commit and deploy. Mintlify runs every .js file in the content directory on every page, after the page becomes interactive.

JavaScript

(function () {
  if (document.querySelector('script[data-key="YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY"]')) return;
  var s = document.createElement("script");
  s.src = "https://answertide.com/w.js";
  s.async = true;
  s.setAttribute("data-key", "YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY");
  document.head.appendChild(s);
})();

GitBook

GitBook does not support a custom third-party script on any plan. Paste this on your main website instead — the widget still answers from your docs wherever it's installed.

  1. Start on your main website. GitBook does not accept a custom script on the docs site.
  2. Open the shared header, footer, or layout file included on every page of the site.
  3. Paste the script tag once, just before the closing </body> tag (or in <head> if the install line says so).
  4. Deploy so every page serves the updated file.

Script tag

<script async src="https://answertide.com/w.js" data-key="YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY"></script>

ReadMe

Custom JavaScript on ReadMe is available on the Enterprise plan. On other plans, paste this on your main website instead. The free Starter project does not include custom HTML, so a script tag in the head is not available there.

  1. On the free Starter project, install on your main website. Starter does not include custom HTML, so a script tag in the head is not available there.
  2. On Enterprise, open Appearance → Custom CSS/JS, then the Custom JavaScript field.
  3. Paste the JavaScript below. The field takes JavaScript, not a <script> tag.
  4. Save. It runs on every page of the published docs.

JavaScript

(function () {
  if (document.querySelector('script[data-key="YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY"]')) return;
  var s = document.createElement("script");
  s.src = "https://answertide.com/w.js";
  s.async = true;
  s.setAttribute("data-key", "YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY");
  document.head.appendChild(s);
})();

Docusaurus

  1. Open docusaurus.config.js (or .ts) at the root of your site.
  2. Add the entry below to the top-level scripts array. Docusaurus renders it as a <script> tag in <head> on every page and keeps extra attributes such as data-key; async stops it blocking the page.
  3. Rebuild and redeploy (docusaurus build).

docusaurus.config.js

scripts: [
  { src: "https://answertide.com/w.js", async: true, "data-key": "YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY" },
],

Document360

Custom JavaScript on Document360 is available on the Business plan and above. On lower tiers, paste this on your main website instead.

  1. Start on your main website unless the knowledge base is on Business or above. The main site uses the generic HTML install.
  2. On Business or above, in the Document360 portal, open Settings → Knowledge base site → Site customization → Custom CSS & JavaScript.
  3. Select the JavaScript tab and paste the JavaScript below. The editor takes JavaScript, not a <script> tag.
  4. Save, then check your published knowledge base. Custom JavaScript does not run in shareable preview links.

JavaScript

(function () {
  if (document.querySelector('script[data-key="YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY"]')) return;
  var s = document.createElement("script");
  s.src = "https://answertide.com/w.js";
  s.async = true;
  s.setAttribute("data-key", "YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY");
  document.head.appendChild(s);
})();

Zendesk Guide

Theme code editing is not available on Suite Team. It's available from Suite Growth and up. On Suite Team, paste this on your main website instead.

  1. In Knowledge admin, open Customize design, click Customize on your theme, then Edit code. Duplicate the live theme first if you want to test before publishing.
  2. Open templates/document_head.hbs — the help center renders it inside <head> on every page.
  3. Paste the script tag at the end of document_head.hbs.
  4. Save (and Publish if you edited a copy of the theme).

Script tag

<script async src="https://answertide.com/w.js" data-key="YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY"></script>

Website builders

Paste the same snippet once, so it loads on every page.

WordPress

  1. In WordPress, open Appearance → Theme File Editor (or your header and footer code plugin).
  2. Paste the snippet just before </body> in the footer, once for the whole site.
  3. Save, then open your site in a new tab.

On WordPress.com, custom code needs a plan that allows plugins or theme edits.

Webflow

  1. In Webflow, open Site settings → Custom code.
  2. Paste the snippet into Footer code.
  3. Save changes, then Publish the site.

Site-wide custom code needs a paid Site plan.

Shopify

  1. In Shopify admin, open Online Store → Themes.
  2. Next to your live theme, choose … → Edit code, then open layout/theme.liquid.
  3. Paste the snippet just before </body> and Save.

Wix

  1. In your Wix dashboard, open Settings → Custom code (under Advanced).
  2. Click + Add Custom Code, paste the snippet, and choose All pages, Load code once.
  3. Set Place code in to Body - end, then Apply.

Custom code needs a premium plan with a connected domain.

Squarespace

  1. In Squarespace, open Website → Pages → Website tools → Code injection (Settings → Advanced → Code injection on older sites).
  2. Paste the snippet into the Footer box.
  3. Save.

Code injection needs a plan that includes it.

Steps written from each platform's help pages; they are not a live install.

Any other site

  1. Open the shared header, footer, or layout file included on every page of the site.
  2. Paste the script tag once, just before the closing </body> tag (or in <head> if the install line says so).
  3. Deploy so every page serves the updated file.
<script async src="https://answertide.com/w.js" data-key="YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY"></script>

Pass visitor details (optional)

Every conversation already shows your team the page the visitor was on, the site they came from and any UTM tags on the link they followed. To add details your site knows, such as a plan or an account number, call setVisitor after the snippet. You can call it again at any time; the latest values are sent with the next message.

<script>
  window.AnswerTideWidget.setVisitor({
    plan: "Growth",
    account_id: "1234",
    name: "Sam Lee"
  });
</script>
  • The details appear in the inbox, on the conversation and in every handoff (email, Slack and your helpdesk).
  • Up to 20 names; each value is cut to 200 characters. Names start with a letter and use letters, numbers, _, - or ..
  • Never pass passwords, tokens or card numbers. Names that look like one are dropped.
  • AnswerTide only keeps what your page sends. It does not look anyone up in other services, and the details are not used in analytics.
  • Anyone can change what a web page sends, so your team sees these details marked "not verified".

Check it is live

Add the website to the allowed list under Install first; AnswerTide only loads on websites you allow. After you deploy, open any page of your docs. Install in the dashboard switches to Live on your domain once the widget loads there. Copying the snippet is not proof of install.
